Sri Kanishka, the heiress of the iconic Iruttukadai Halwa in Tirunelveli, has filed a dowry harassment complaint against her husband Balram Singh and his family, alleging that they are demanding ownership of the family-run sweet shop.

The complaint, filed by Kanishka’s mother Kavitha Singh—who currently serves as the Chairperson of Iruttukadai Halwa—accuses Balram’s family of making persistent dowry demands after the couple’s wedding earlier this year.

Kanishka and Balram Singh got married on February 2 and had been living together in Coimbatore with his family. According to the complaint, Balram’s family had already received significant dowry in the form of jewellery, cash, and a luxury car worth Rs. 1.5 crore.

However, tensions reportedly escalated when Balram’s family began demanding a stake in Iruttukadai Halwa, a household name in southern Tamil Nadu. The legendary sweet shop, known for its signature halwa, has been operated by the Singh family for three generations and is considered a landmark in Tirunelveli.

In April, Kanishka returned to Tirunelveli after leaving her marital home, citing pressure from her in-laws. Her mother subsequently filed a complaint with the Tirunelveli Police Commissioner against Balram Singh and his family, accusing them of dowry harassment and undue pressure to transfer business ownership.

Meanwhile, Balram Singh’s family has publicly denied the allegations, claiming there is no truth to the accusations.
