R Sudha, a Congress Member of Parliament (MP) from Tamil Nadu, fell prey to chain snatching early on the morning of Monday, August 4, outside the Polish embassy in Delhi.

The MP representing the  Mayiladuthurai constituency in Tamil Nadu was out on her morning walk when the incident occurred. She was walking with DMK Rajya Sabha member Rajathi Salma in Chanakyapuri when a man on a bike snatched her gold chain. Chanakyapuri is a diplomatic enclave housing many embassies, official residences and administrators’ residences.

Following the incident, the MP penned a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, pointing to the lack of security in a high-security zone.

In the letter, the MP said, “This blatant attack on a woman who is a Member of the Parliament in a high-security zone like Chanakyapuri, which is full of embassies and protected institutions, is shocking, to say the least. If a woman cannot walk safely in this high-priority zone in the national capital of India, where else can we feel safe?”

The attack happened around 6.15 am when an individual on a scooter snatched the chain on the MP’s neck, weighing around 32 gms. The MP said that her clothes had been torn and that she had an injury to her neck.

In the letter, the MP urged the Home Minister to direct the police to track down the thief.
