Following states like Gujarat and Jammu & Kashmir, the Tamil Nadu government has banned the production, storage and sale of Maggi Noodles, Wai Wai Xpress, Reliance Select Instant Noodles and Smith and Jones Chicken Masala Noodles for a period of three months. The government has taken the decision following testing of samples of 65 food products in the state. TN CM J Jayalalithaa has ordered action to be taken against the companies in accordance with prevailing laws.In a press release, the TN government stated that following media reports of lead and MSG being present in Maggi Noodles above permissable limits, the health welfare department took samples of 65 food products from the state for testing. Of the 17 which were taken in Chennai, results of 7 are available with the authorities. The government says that 6 samples have been found to have lead and MSG above permissable limits. Following this, the government has banned the four noodles brands for three months. No production, storage or sale of these products will be allowed in the state during this period. Retailers have been asked to return the packets of these brands to the companies.The Tamil Nadu state consumer dispute redressal commission (TNSCDRC),Madurai bench has also sent out notices to actors Amitabh Bachchan, Preity Zinta , and the managing director of Nestle India Ltd after a petition . The commisssion also directed officials to take samples of the product for testing.
