A weather warning has been issued to fishermen in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in view of impending rains. The Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authorities (TNSDMA) tweeted on Thursday that strong winds from the East would be impacting the coast of North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Tamil Nadu DMA stated that winds would reach up to 35 to 45 kmph and that they have cautioned fisherfolk in the regions to be wary and not to venture out to sea for the next 24 hours.

“Strong winds from Easterly direction speed occasionally reaching 35-45kmph likely along the coast of North Tamilnadu and Puducherry. Strong winds from Northerly/Northwesterly direction speed reaching 35-45 kmph likely along and off South Tamilnadu coast,” read the statement tweeted by TNSDMA.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday evening, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Chief Balachandran stated that districts along the coast of Tamil Nadu have been asked to be on high alert in view of the impending rains. He stated that the North East monsoon had commenced and stated that there was a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal near Sri Lanka. He also added that for the next 24 hours, coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry would see rain showers. Chennai is expected to see intermittent rainfall.

The IMD has also put up a weather warning on its site, stating that heavy rain is expected in various parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala. It also mentions that some parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala are likely to receive “heavy to very heavy rain”.
