Convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, AG Perarivalan, reportedly suffered injuries after being attacked by a fellow inmate with an iron rod at the Vellore central prison on Tuesday morning.

According to The Times of India, Perarivalan was  treated at the prison hospital, and received four stitches on his forehead. The report states that Rajesh Khanna, (46), had a tiff with Perarivalan which came to blows, resulting in Perarivalan receiving injuries on his forehead and hands.

Rajesh Khanna has been serving a sentence of life imprisonment for the last 13 years in a case of kidnap and murder. Sources in the prison told TOI that the argument took place after the prison authorities had planned to shift Rajesh Khanna out of a high-rise block following complaints from other inmates.

The Hindu quoted a senior official of the prisons department as saying that inquiries are being carried out as the two prisoners are lodged in separate blocks. “While Perarivalan is lodged in the high security-1 block, Rajesh is in the high security-2 block,” the official was quoted as saying.  

Perarivalan has been serving a sentence of life imprisonment for more than 25 years in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
