Condolences continue to pour in for veteran director J Mahendran who gave Tamil cinema several notable films. Many from the film industry, including actors Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Archana, Udhayanidhi Stalin, Radikaa, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, directors Mani Ratnam, Barathiraja, Shankar, music director Ilaiyaraaja and others visited his Pallikaranai residence in Chennai to pay their respects.

Actor Rajinikanth who shared a close bond with the director said that Mahendran taught him “newness” in acting. “He brought out a new Rajini from within me,” he told news channels.

Mahendran has given three of Rajinikanth’s most important films - Mullum Malarum where he played the angry Kaali, Johnny in which in he played the dual roles of a conman and a barber and later Kai Kodukkum Kai where he was seen as Kaalimuthu, a man with a forgiving heart.

His dialogue ‘Ketta paiyan sir indha Kaali’ from Mullum Malarum remains unparalleled in Tamil cinema, even today.

In an interview that was given a while ago, Rajini recalled how Mahendran inspired him to deliver this iconic dialogue with panache.

Director Mahendran is survived by his wife, son and daughters. His last rites will be held at 5.00 pm on Tuesday. The 79-year-old director had taken severely ill in the past few days. He was discharged and brought home from Apollo Hospitals late on Monday night.

Following the news of his demise, several actors and directors tweeted their condolences.
