With the northeast monsoon well underway in Tamil Nadu, southern parts of the state have received heavy rainfall over the last few days. As of Saturday, Tirunelveli topped the charts with 504.70 mm of rainfall over the last 24 hours, followed by Thoothukudi (521.20 mm) and Nilgiris (214.20 mm). In stark contrast, Chennai has been a disappointment, with little to no expected rainfall in the city. 

According to a statement from the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, light to moderate rain is likely to occur at a few places in Tamil Nadu over the weekend. Puducherry is also set to experience light to moderate rainfall next week, particularly on Tuesday and Wednesday. Heavy rain at isolated places over coastal parts of the state is also expected in these two days.

Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Ariyalur and Perambalur districts, the RMC said. An India Meteorological Department (IMD) bulletin said that thunderstorm accompanied by lightning is very likely at isolated places in Tamilnadu, Puducherry, Karaikal and Mahe.

As far as Chennai is concerned, the Met Department said that the sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy. Light rain is likely to occur in some areas. With a poor track record of rains over the past few weeks, weather experts have pinned their hopes on this weekend's wind convergence. 

Popular city-based weather blogger Pradeep John, who runs the Facebook page Tamil Nadu Weatherman, wrote, “KTC (Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Chennai) next spell of rains from easterly is from 20-23rd November, we should not miss these rains because there is break in rains for Chennai after that and rains will however continue in South TN. TN as overall will see the magic of MJO (Madden–Julian oscillation) in that period. So crucial for KTC between 20-23rd November (sic).”
