In his first public appearance in months, DMK president and former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi visited party mouthpiece Murasoli office in Chennai on Thursday. The 93-year-old has been confined to his residence since October 2016 owing to poor health.

On Thursday, he spent about 30 minutes at the Murasoli office. He was accompanied by the party’s working president MK Stalin, party secretary Durai Murugan and his daughter Selvi. He considers Murasoli, party organ, as his ‘first child’.

Karunanidhi, who last visited the office a year ago, attended an exhibition which was put up to mark the platinum jubilee of Murasoli. Duraimuragan told The Hindu, “He smiled and waved at the crowd assembled in front of his house and Murasoli office.”

He added that Karunanidhi enjoyed every moment of the exhibition and closely watched the wax model of him which was displayed at the exhibition.

The DMK chief has been out of active politics for the past few months, since he developed a drug allergy in October 2016. Last December, Karunanidhi was hospitalised three times for breathing difficulties, and underwent a tracheostomy.
