Officials stop six child marriages in Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram

The News Minute | September 8, 2014 | 8:30 am ISTSix child marriages in Sivaganga and Ramanthapuram have been stopped by the Social Welfare Deparment and Childline officials.With help from police and revenue officers, they rescued the child bridges aged 14-17, said The Hindu.Parents of some girls refused to stop marriage proceedings, but changed their minds after officials reminded them of action under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act. The Social Welfare Department officials were informed by teachers who noticed the girls’ absence from their schools, said the report.One of the parents, a man in Rameswaram threatened to commit suicide along with his two daughters by using kerosene if the marriage was not allowed, said the report. The father was then convinced not to go ahead with it.
