Newly married TN couple asks for police protection, over fears of honour killing

A newly married couple have asked the Thuraiyur Police in Tiruchy for protection alleging that the girl’s parents might carry out honour killing.

The police said P Nagamani (23) and M Jayakumar( 27) were both working in the same private mill at T Pettai. They both fell in love but Nagamani’s parents were against the relationship saying that they both are from different castes, according to The New Indian Express.

However, the couple got married at sub-registrar’s office in Thuraiyur on March 24, 2016. The couple claims to have been receiving threatening calls from Nagamani’s mother and her maternal uncle.

The couple approached the Thuraiyur police for protection and Nagamani also filed a complaint saying that they may be killed. The investigation in the case has begun.

A 21-year-old Dalit man, Sankar and his wife were hacked in Udumulpet in Tiruchy on March 13, 2016 after eight months of their marriage. While Sankar lost his life on the way to the Coimbatore government hospital, his wife Kausalya, was admitted to the ICU in a critical condition.
