More than a year since DSP Vishnupriya’s death, CBI finally begins probe

CBI officials finally began their investigation into the controversial death of DSP Vishnupriya, who died under mysterious circumstances last year.

The officials quizzed her family members on Tuesday, the New Indian Express reported.

Before the CB-CID sleuths took over the case, the investigation into her death was initially carried out by the Tiruchengode police.

Her father filed a petition in the Madras High Court demanding a CBI investigation. The plea was earlier rejected by a single judge bench but the division bench approved it.

The state government challenged the HC order in the Supreme Court, stating that the CB-CID investigation was conducted in a just manner. However, the Supreme Court upheld the HC’s order in October and ruled in favour of a CBI probe.

On July 1 this year, The Madras High Court had ordered a CBI investigation into the mysterious death of DSP Vishnupriya who was investigating the infamous Gokulraj murder case.

Vishnupriya, a Dalit by birth, left a seven-page suicide note. Written in English and Tamil but in the Roman script, she apologised to her parents, and stated that her decision had nothing to do with the ‘sensitive case’.

However, soon after that, friends and family members alleged that she committed suicide due to pressure from senior officers in the case.

It may be recalled that on September 18, 2015, DSP Vishnupriya was found hanging by a police constable at her official residence in Thiruchengode in Namakkal district.
