The News Minute | December 15, 2014 | 10.50 am ISTTamil Nadu has the highest suicide rate among all Indian states. 2013 saw a 6% increase in the number of suicides over the previous year and it has also been found that men committed more suicides than women. Of the 16,927 suicides committed in 2013, 11,182 were committed by men, Times of India reported. The percentage rise in men committing suicide has been 4% while that of women has dipped by 12%.Psychiatrists say that unlike women, men are not ready to confide their problems and seek help. The major reasons behind suicides have been ascribed to depression over domestic disputes and employment. "Fewer men seek help than women. Women seek help for their emotional problems, but men tend to internalise problems and take to alcohol and drug abuse, making them more likely to commit suicide,” said Dr. Lakshmi Vijayakumar, a psychiatrist. "Men tend to use violent means to commit suicide, therefore a higher risk of mortality," she added.
