Major commotion outside Apollo Hospital, following TV reports

Written by : TNM Staff

Commotion erupted outside outside Apollo Hospital on Greams Road following media reports about Jayalalithaa’s health.

People began to throw stones, upturned barricades, and threw chairs and water bottles at the police around 5.30 pm. Police lathicharged the crowd.

Crowds began to arrive at Greams Hospital on Sunday evening, after news of Jayalalithaa’s cardiac arrest.

The commotion started after Jaya TV seen as the official mouthpiece of the AIADMK flashed erroneously for a fleeting moment that Jayalalithaa had passed away. The news was immediately taken off. Following this, popular Tamil channels began to report the news. English media picked up on this.

Within minutes, Apollo Hospital tweeted a clarification that a team of doctors are continuing to treat the CM.

The crowd was restive but no untoward incident had occurred so far.

Jayalalithaa has been admitted to hospital since September 22, after she complained of fever and dehydration.

Apollo’s doctors have maintained that while her condition was critical, she was on ECMO and other life support system since.

London-based Dr Richard Beale, who has been monitoring her condition since she fell ill in September, issued a statement earlier on Monday stating that her condition was grave.
