The News Minute | January 20, 2015 | 02.20 pm ISTConcentrate on the larger issue of freedom of expression and the threats it faces - this is the suggestion made by the Madras High court bench which heard a PIL filed by writers against the ban faced by author Perumal Murugan against his book ‘Mathorubagan’.The bench said that the larger issue according to it was the wielding of power by extra-judicial groups in deciding what is right and what isn’t, reported Times of India. Making it clear that the bench would not make any decisions based on media reports , it said that it would issue notice to the author to narrate the events of the the peace meeting in order to determine if the decisions made there were under compulsion or out of one’s own decision. The observations made in response to a PIL field by Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers and Artists Association president S Tamilselvam, the bench also said that the authorities presiding over the meeting must have directed the protesting groups to file complaints instead . Saying that the authorities should not play to the tunes of extra-judicial groups, it also said that the petitioners should concentrate more on the issue of threat to freedom of expression than the issue of staying Murugan’s undertaking, said the report.
