Written by : TNM

The News Minute | March 14, 2015 | 10.20 am ISTThe Madras High Court rapped the Chennai city police for the arrest of 82-year-old social activist Traffic Ramaswamy. Justice TS Sivagnanam “Prima facie, it appears that the arrest and taking into custody (of Mr. Ramaswamy) at 4 a.m. is unjustified. The respondents should justify their action in effecting arrest at 4 a.m. and the need for seeking remand,” reported The Hindu. He also directed the government to shift Ramaswamy to the hospital for treatment. According to hospital sources, the senior citizen was brought to the hospital in an unconscious state. He was then shifted to the IMCU after he complained of urine retention and abdomen pain, said the New Indian Express. “I was removing posters on Alagappa Road, Purasawalkam, on Wednesday . Some unknown group came and started arguing with me to stop removing them from the wall. In the argument, some one from the group gave me a blow on the face. Then, that argument was settled and I left the place. In the early morning, police came to my lodge at Triplicane and arrested me on the charge of intimidating a businessman,” said Ramaswamy to NIE. Ramaswamy was picked up by the police at 4am on Thursday, accusing him of threatening a businessman, reported Times of India. The half-naked activist was taken to a woman magistrate’s house and remanded to judicial custody. According to earlier reports, Ramaswamy had been removing posters on roads when he 'threatened' a restaurant owner who then lodged a complaint against him. Read Traffic Ramaswamy's arrest: Is the Tamil Nadu police treating activists with disdain?TweetFollow @thenewsminute
