By land, by air or by sea: This TN Collector is on a mission to get people to vote

Posters are passe, Nagapattinam’s District Collector appears to believe in doing things with a bang. He’s got land, sea and air routes planned to get the people in his district to go out and vote.

District Collector S Palanisami is currently using boats along the district’s 56 fishing villages to spread the message of voting during elections.

“Most of the awareness drives usually take the normal campaign route. I wanted to do something different,” he says, adding that the campaign will go on a few  more days as it has been received well by people.

Before the ongoing boating expedition, he made news last week for using paragliding to inspire people to get inked. He organized a two-day paragliding awareness program in the towns of Mayiladuthurai and Vedaranyam, which was a bid to attract the newly enrolled voters.

With Nagapattinam having more women voters than men, the Collector’s awareness campaign is also aimed at increasing women’s voting percentage. “Nagapattinam’s coastal villages have very poor voting percentile. This campaign is meant to get the people along these villages, especially fishermen, to vote,” says Palanisami.

His most conventional voting campaign so far, was a human chain last month, involving 2,500 students from various colleges.
