A second-year medical student of the Madurai Medical College was found dead near the hostel building on Wednesday.

The deceased, Mohammed Shaw (20), hailed from Kollam in Kerala.

On Wednesday morning, the cleaning staff found Mohammed dead near the hostel. He had several injuries on his body, reported The Times of India.

Mohammed’s friends told the Madurai police that they had seen him last on Tuesday night and he was talking on the phone with someone on the terrace of the hostel. However, the hostel mates told the police that they saw him around 1pm.

Reportedly, there were severe injuries on his head and limbs. A police officer told ToI that they suspect he might have accidentally fallen from the terrace. But they have not ruled out the possibility of a suicide.

Police officials have spoken to the parents and close friends of Mohammed. They will also check the call details of the deceased.

The dean of the college, MR Vairamuthu Raju said that the parents of the student were immediately informed and his body was shifted to Government Rajaji Hospital for post-mortem. The body was later taken to Kollam.

A case has been registered under Section 174 of the CrPc (death in suspicious circumstances) and the case is being further investigated, reported ToI.
