Written by : TNM Staff

The Apollo Hospital in Chennai has released a statement stating that Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday evening.

The hospital said that she is being treated by a team of cardiologists, pulmonologists and critical care specialists.

Reports state that the health of the CM is critical and that she is back in the critical care unit.

Sources indicate that she is being treated with ECMO or extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation. This is a process in which the functions of the heart and lungs are carried out outside the body. Performed with the use of a special machine, ECMO involves drawing blood out of large blood vessels into a pump and through an oxygenation chamber that removes the carbon dioxide, adds oxygen and returns the blood to the patient's body.

According to sources, she developed complications this evening.

She was admitted to hospital on September 22. She has been under respiratory support since then.
