The News Minute| September 2, 2014| 8.25 am ISTA woman’s death in an unregistered fertility clinic in Coimbatore has sparked concerns about the dangers of increasing unregistered fertility clinics in the state and the lack of government monitoring to stem this practice. Sujatha Savood, a 26 year-old woman admitted in a clinic for fertility treatment allegedly died on Saturday after developing fits due shots received for her treatment, said the Times of India. A postmortem is yet to be conducted but relatives alleged that shots administered to her earlier in the clinic were responsible, said the report.The clinic in question is not one among the seven hospitals and clinics with licences to provide infertility treatment, said the directorate of Medical Services to TOI. However, the doctor who handled the patient negated the idea of a faulty injection as there has been no allergic reaction to the HCG injection, said the report.Only half the infertility clinics in Coimbatore have required permissions to provide fertility treatment. A delay in licence processing and a lack of staff were attributed as reasons for the lack of licence according to TOI.
