How Amma pharmacies will work

The News Minute | June 26, 2014 | 4:50 PM IST After Amma idlies at Ammacanteens, Amma water and Amma salt, Tamil Nadu government has started a chain of Amma drug stores.Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa today inaugurated 10 of the state-run outlets. What the Amma pharmacies will do-Amma pharmacy will provide branded medicine at a discount of 10% to MRP (Maximum Retail Price)The cooperative store network in the state will procure and stock branded medicines. The medicines will be bought in bulk form drug companies at a discounted rate.With the help of these discounts, the state will sell medicines at rates lesser than what is sold in retail market. The shops have been set up in areas where demands for drugs are higher.The scheme will not be able to fulfil demands of all people, but state says it will force other retailers to cut down prices.The state government had announced that Rs 20 crore would be used from the Price Stabilisation Fund for running the pharmacies.
