A 17-year-old girl from Ramanathapuram in Madurai was found dead under mysterious conditions on Monday, few days after she reportedly told her parent that she wants to marry a Dalit boy.

According to The New Indian Express, an NGO called Evidence has claimed that Shalini, a caste Hindu girl was in love with a 24-year-old Dalit, M Saravanan for the past few years. M Saravanan who was working in Dubai came to meet Shalini at her home on November 16. Her parents saw that and got him arrested by police. It is said that the girl’s mother registered a complaint for sexual misbehaviour but the girl had denied such rumours.

Apparently, M Saravanan was arrested for trespassing and later released on bail.

The caste Hindu court had told the girl’s family that if she marries the Dalit boy their family will be ostracized from the caste Hindu community.

The girl was found dead on Monday and before the police could come to the place of death, the family had already cremated her body, according to TNIE report.
