The fine has come as a major embarrassment to the AIADMK.The appointment of IAS officer U. Sagayam was delayed by the AIADMK government. The officer had unearthed illegalities in granite quarrying which caused a loss of Rs. 16,000 crore to the government, The Hindu reported. On September 11 the High Court had asked the government to appoint Sagayam as an officer to probe the scam, which the AIADMK government delayed. It had approached the Supreme Court to get the High Court's direction cancelled. However, the Supreme Court had dismissed the state's appeal. The High Court on Tuesday fined the government Rs. 10,000 and ordered the government to appoint the officer as a court-nominated special commissioner to probe the scam.
