Former AIADMK Rajya Sabha MP V Maitreyan on Wednesday, August 13, quit the principal opposition party and joined the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Maitreyan met Chief Minister and DMK president MK Stalin at the party headquarters, Anna Arivalayam, where he was formally inducted into the party.

Maitreyan had been a prominent leader in the AIADMK until the death of former party general secretary J Jayalalithaa in December 2016. Following her demise, he was among the few leaders who sided with O Panneerselvam when the party split. In 2023, he was expelled by AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami for alleged anti-party activities, after which he rejoined his parent party, the BJP.

However, his second stint in the BJP did not see him occupy any prominent role. In 2024, Maitreyan quit the BJP and returned to the AIADMK. Earlier this year, he was appointed as the party’s organising secretary.
