A second-year medical student of Coimbatore Medical college has filed a complaint with the national anti-ragging body stating that first year students were forced to strip and drink beer in the hostel by their seniors.

The student, in his complaint filed last Thursday, wrote that on the first day in the hostel, “seniors called us and forced us to remove our inners and wear just formal clothes. We are forced to wear formal clothes even to the restroom. They also made us buy cigarettes and beer and even poured beer in our mouth,” according to The New Indian Express.

He also said that the government and people believe that ragging is common in medical colleges and that that’s what makes them “real doctors”. He asked the national anti-ragging body to intervene and stop ragging in the hostel.

The dean of the college, A Edwin Joy told The New Indian Express that they have responded to the national body of anti-ragging. He assured that ragging won’t happen in the college due to the presence of faculty members. In the hostels, he said that they have a different building for the first-year students and seniors will not be allowed inside.

In a goof-up by the anti-ragging body, the identity and phone number of the complainant from the Coimbatore Medical College were revealed on their website. The college has told the national body not to disclose the identity of the complainant.
