Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi on Monday warned of anti-Hindi agitations if Sanskrit was imposed in the state.  His statement comes days after the media reported that the HRD Ministry was considering setting up a board for Vedic education.

Speaking at the wedding of a DMK leader, Karunanidhi hit out the BJP-led Central government saying, “People who try to uphold Sanksrit in Tamil Nadu are fools.” He accused the ruling AIADMK of toeing the BJP line and destroying Tamil. “With the blessings of the ruling government Sanskrit is pushed and steps are taken to destroy the Tamil language,” he said.

Karunanidhi urged the people of Tamil Nadu to “fight against Sanskrit imposition” and said there was no place for any language in any form other than Tamil in Tamil Nadu.

Last week, the DMK had slammed the Centre for promoting the use of Hindi in routine conversations in government offices and in the North East and in South India.
