Despite conviction, populist theatre-cum-market scheme to come in "Amma" label

Highly populist schemes were launched by the AIADMK government under the name “Amma,” by which people usually address the former Chief Minister. J. Jayalalithaa who had been disqualified as an MLA and had lost her chief ministership after a special court in Bengaluru convicted her in the disproportionate assets case. Under the new scheme, theatres will be launched under the label “Amma Theatre.” People will be able to watch movies in these theatres at less than Rs. 25 per ticket. It will be made within the premises of an Amma weekly flea market which will offer over 600 products at subsidized prices. The first such market cum theatre is scheduled to be opened in Mogappair in Chennai, Times of India reported.Tamil Nadu Housing Board has given 3.94 acres vacant land for the construction of this project in the Mogappair area. "It will benefit more than 10,000 families in the locality," mayor Saidai S Duraisamy said on Saturday. Under the first phase of the plan Nungambakkam, Ramapuram, Mint, Anna Nagar, Harbour, Maduravoyal and Perungudi are scheduled get such theatre cum market by December.
