Cut-outs in Tamil Nadu, from birth through puberty to death

Written by : TNM

Tamil Nadu is the quintessential cut-out country. All of us are witness to the poster craze at political rallies during elections or even in our streets on a normal day. In her book Cut-Outs, Caste and Cine stars, author Vaasanthi shows how giant banners, posters and cut-outs are an integral part of Tamil politics. But it’s not just politics. From birth, through puberty and marriage to death, we announce our joys and sorrows to the world with those giant canvases. Here are some of the life-events for which we found cut-out. 1) Celebrating 1st Birthday    2) Child’s ear piercing ceremony   3) When the girls attain puberty    4) Wedding bells!   5) Housewarming party, cut-out style   6) This one is a real stretch: congratulations on retirement from government service!  7) Mourning death of loved ones  8) Death Anniversary: In remembrance  Tamil Nadu and cut-outs, even death shall not do us part! Also read: Microsoft's age detection app thinks SRK is in his 20s, and is confused about Rahul Gandhi Image Source:https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/20141016110547-46090256-visual-exploration-posters-in-tamil-nadu-indiahttps://richardarunachala.wordpress.comhttp://dualartspress.com/stars-of-the-show-tamil-and-chola-january-29https://xgeronimo.wordpress.com/category/wierd/https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/20140829043335-9856952-discovering-mass-marketsSpecial thanks to @nalini_krish for Number 6
