The Tamil Nadu state committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Tuesday, July 29, issued a statement asking  the state police to take  action against the unidentified caller who allegedly issued death threats to Madurai MP S Venkatesan for his critical remarks against the BJP-led government over the Pahalgam attack.

On Monday, the Parliament witnessed a fierce debate between the Opposition and the ruling BJP over the government’s handling of the Pahalgam attacks and Operation Sindoor.

In his speech, CPI(M) MP Venkatesan, representing Madurai constituency, sought accountability from the government over its alleged failure to thwart the Pahalgam attack in which 26 civilians were killed by terrorists.

“ The government’s statement  today is the same as it was when the 2016 Uri attack and the 2019 Pathankot attack occurred. After so many tall claims, how did the Pahalgam incident come to be? It is shameful that the administration received news of the incident only one and a half hours after it began. It is a three fold failure. It is the failure of the Indian Army, the CRPF and the Jammu and Kashmir Police force.”

“Who will take responsibility for the failure? the Home Minister or the Prime Minister who says one country one leader,” Venkatesan asked.

According to the CPI(M), following this speech Venkatesan received a call from an unknown person who threatened to kill him. “How can you speak critically about Prime Minister Modi? You won’t be able to enter Tamil Nadu alive. If you come to Tamil Nadu, I will kill you myself,” the caller threatened using vulgar and abusive language.

The statement said that the MP has filed an online complaint with Tamil Nadu Director General of Police (DGP) Shankar Jiwal.

“Issuing a death threat to a Member of Parliament for something spoken inside Parliament is an act that mocks parliamentary democracy itself. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) calls on all democratic forces to raise their strong voice of condemnation against this anti-democratic act,” the party said in its statement.
