The News Minute | December 4, 2014 | 8.56 am iSTTeam “Lingaa” breathed a sigh of relief when the High Court of Madras rejected a petition that was filed by a film maker claiming that the movie’s storyline was his.Film maker Ravi Rathinam had approached the court with a petition that the storyline of Lingaa was same as that of his movie Mullai Vanam 999. He had said that his entire movie was uploaded on YouTube in February, 2013.Justice M. Venugopal rejected the claim saying that uploading in YouTube would not amount to publication. He said that the filmmaker had approached the court to gain undue publicity for himself, the Times of India reported."The petitioner himself is not sure of his rights or what duty he seeks to enforce through a mandamus (court direction). It is a fit case to be dismissed in admission stage itself. The petitioner cannot claim copyright for an unpublished work, and statements in YouTube do not constitute publication of story," the judge said.
