Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announced plans to construct an integrated Assembly and Secretariat complex on Thursday, September 3. The new building is planned to be built across 20 lakh square feet with an estimated cost of Rs 1,200 crore.
The integrated complex will house the Legislative Assembly, the offices of the chief minister and other ministers, and other government departments.
Announcing the plans in the Assembly, Chief Minister Vijay said that the present buildings at the Fort St George campus cannot be expanded further because of limited land availability. The newly proposed complex is touted to meet all administrative requirements of the next 100 years. This includes modern infrastructure, parking facilities, conference halls, and public service centres. The location of the proposed complex has not been announced.
The proposal comes after several previous attempts to move the Assembly and Secretariat buildings. In 2010, former chief minister M Karunanidhi shifted the Assembly and Secretariat to a newly constructed building at Omandurar Government Estate. However, it was shifted back to the Fort St George building in 2011 when J Jayalalitha came to power. The building in Omandurar was converted into a hospital.
