The News Minute| August 23, 2014| 10.00 am ISTMany a time, you might have inadvertently tried to comprehend the age of the adolescent-looking boy cleaning dining tables at the restaurant you frequent, with the words ‘child labour’ striking the mind. The idea of child labour might seem like a thing of the past; however the recent rescue of five child workers from an eatery and a vegetable shop in Chennai indicates that this practice is still rampant in the city under our very eyes. The raids conducted by labour department officials were carried out early in the morning as owners kept the minors in hiding during other times. According to the Hindu, two children were rescued this week from ‘Pazhamudir Nilayam’, a popular chain selling fruits and vegetables. Last week, three children from Andhra Pradesh were picked up from ‘Naidu Mess’, a restaurant in T.Nagar.While children rescued maintain that they are above 14 years of age, medical tests on bones indicate otherwise. Many children migrating from other states possess certificates that indicate they have completed schooling up to class VIII, said a senior labour department official to The Hindu.
