However, Chennai is home to a telephone that has entered its hundredth year of service at the Indian Commerce and Industries Co. Pvt. Ltd in Broadway.Connection for the telephone was established in 1915 when it was owned by Beehive Foundry , the flagship company of the Beehive Kowtha Group. The company was then taken over by Indian Commerce and Industries said The Times of India.The fourth generation head of Indian Commerce and Industries Director, Ramesh C Kumar, who was felicitated by BSNL as the owner of the oldest existing telephone line in Chennai , intends to keep the telephone connection in the family. The telephone line has undergone quite a transformation since the time of its initiation. "We first had a three-digit number, which changed to 2020 in 1952. It later changed to 21071," Ramesh said to TOI. "With the introduction of Kalmandapam Telephone Exchange, our line shifted to the new exchange and it allotted us the number 555021. When the Harbour Telephone Exchange opened, the line shifted again and the number changed to 512221," he said.The number then again changed to conform first to the 7-number requirement and now exists as an eight-digit number, said the report.The telephone line is probably the oldest in the country, said Ramesh to TOI.
