The News Minute | Aug 26, 2014 | 08:20 am ISTChennai could see the last of its bad roads, if a plan to relay almost all roads in the city, including all arterial stretches and bus routes is carried out by the city Corporation.A discussion between the mayor and a team of engineers will decide the effectiveness of replacing tar roads with concrete costing around 1600 crore for 441 km. Costing thrice the cost of laying a tar road, however it negates the necessity to relay the roads many times. "In the end, the cost will almost be the same," he said. Concrete roads required little maintenance and the corporation was aiming to adopt the model of cities such as Mangalore where roads are completely concretized, said a Corporation official in a Times of India report.Urban planners have cautiously welcomed the idea. "It makes sense because of the low maintenance cost. But when planned on such a large scale, carriageways should be re-designed before they are relaid," said Institute for Transportation and Development Policy technical director Chris Krost to TOI. Deep, uncovered manholes and sides of roads left uncovered to facilitate agencies like TNEB to fix connections is a problem facing the Corporation when it takes up the new plan.
