The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) has announced a temporary cut in the supply of drinking water in parts of Chennai starting March 21. Areas in Adyar, Perungudi and Sholinganallur will be impacted, CMWSSB. The supply cut is due to a scheduled maintenance shutdown at the Nemmeli desalination plant from March 21 to March 26.

The desalination plant has a production capacity of 110 million liters a day (MLD), CMWSSB also said. Areas to be affected are:

Adyar (Zone 13)

Supply cut on: March 21, 23, and 25

Areas: Adyar, Besant Nagar and Thiruvanmiyur

Perungudi (Zone 14)

Supply cut on: March 22 and 24

Areas:  Perungudi, Palavakkam and Karapakkam

Sholinganallur (Zone 15)

Supply cut on: March 26

Areas: Sholinganallur and Okkiyam-Thoraipakkam

The CMWSSB added that there will be no disruption in the free supply of drinking water by lorries to areas that do not have drinking water on tap or where the water pressure is not high.

Further, the CMWSSB has urged residents to use the Dial for Water service on its website in order to book water tankers in case of an emergency.

Earlier this month, The Hindu had reported that work to replace parts of the reverse osmosis membranes would be undertaken at the Nemmeli plant towards the end of March.
