Chennai metro rail patrons will have access to a range of free movies, music and TV soaps, thanks to a mobile entertainment system launched by CMRL.

Come March, commuters will be able to install the app on their phones and watch shows, movies and and listen to music while riding to their location.

Speaking to TOI, a metro rail official said that CMRL would be the first metro rail service in the country to have this entertainment system inside the trains. Adding that trials of the app were being conducted on three trains, he said that they would be launching between the end of March and early April.

Earlier this week, CMRL also announced that it will provide WiFi connectivity at all its stations. The metro rail service has floated tenders to offer Internet connectivity across the 45 km stretch of Phase 1 of CMRL. When operations begin in north Chennai, this would be extended to the 10 km stretch from Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar and to 10 new trains.

Reports in the Hindu have also stated that CMRL is set to launch dynamic maps which would show commuters the route they are traveling through and the subsequent stations. Currently, the maps are simple and only show the next station.

CMRL began construction of the 54 km Phase I in 2009, following which Koyambedu-Alandur section of the Blue line opened in June 2015. This phase covers locations from Washermanpet in north Chennai to the airport in south Chennai. Work is continuing to extend phase I from Washermanpet to Thiruvottriyur, 9 kilometres to the  north.
