In a shocking incident, police on Sunday arrested a man who tied his 60-year-old mother to a chair and burnt her alive at Arumbakkam in Chennai.

Forty-year-old D Amarnath Prasad told the police that he killed his mother because she did not find a bride for her and get him married. He was working as a cab driver and was an alcoholic.

Police told The Times of India that he often used to get drunk and have a quarrel with his mother, Sasikala. She had restricted movement after a leg injury. Officials said, she lived with her son Prasad and her younger sister, a spinster. Neighbours said they heard Prasad shouting at his mother on Saturday night, reported TOI.

At 5:30 am on Sunday, neighbours heard the woman shouting for help. They found her tied to a chair and had burn injuries. They called an ambulance and took her to Kilpauk government hospital where the doctors told them that she survived with 70 percent injuries, but she diedon Sunday afternoon.

Before her death, she gave a statement to Arumbakkam police and told them that he son had burnt her alive.
