Chennai building collapse: death toll rises to 26, rescue work underway

The News Minute | July 1, 2014 | 08:36 am IST The number of fatalities in the Chennai building collapse has risen to 26 as of now.However, two more people were rescued alive from the site of the multi-storey building collapse in Chennai, on Monday morning. Of the two people rescued, one was a woman, Meenammal, and the other a man, Govind; both of them labourers.Rescue operations are still on as over 30 people are still feared to be missing. According to reports, the stench of decomposing flesh is making it difficult to carry on rescue operations, as the team has to come up for fresh air in regular intervals. Also, there is a risk of spreading of infection. The under-construction residential building in Moulivakkam area in Porur collapsed on Saturday evening, trapping over 70 people.42 labourers have been safely pulled out till now.
