Caste clashes in Theni, police injured after opening fire

The News Minute | December 27, 2014 | 08:42 am IST Violence that ignited after clashes between two communities during a funeral procession of a local Forward Bloc functionary led to police opening fire. According to police, the firing was initiated after the Superintendent of Police J Mahesh and seven police officers were injured in the violence, reported The New Indian Express. The violence began when a man was killed when a tractor knocked him down during the funeral procession of SR Tamilan, the district general secretary of Forward Bloc, said the report. Those who participated in the procession also threw garlands at some people who raised objectionable slogans at another community. The tractor knocked down Pallupandi alias Ramar, who died from his injuries. When angry residents threw stones, several people from different communities gathered with weapons and attacked each other. Following this, the police used force in which many officers were injured.
