BJP alleges AIADMK threatened, abducted its local poll candidates

The News Minute| September 9, 2014| 7.00 am ISTA tussle has broken out between BJP and AIADMK in Tamil Nadu with the BJP alleging that many of its candidates contesting for the local body by-elections had been threatened or bought over by the AIADMK, and one was abducted.AIADMK candidates were declared elected unopposed in at least five local body by-election seats, as BJP candidates withdrew from the race.Newly-appointed state BJP chief Tamilisai Soundararajan held a press meet alleging that many candidates had been threatened. The press meet was called after mayoral candidate in Tirunelveli, GPR Velliyammal pulled out of the race. Tamilisai Soundararajan alleged that the candidate pulled put after threats. The state BJP chief also alleged that a ward candidate from Villipuram district had been abducted by AIADMK cadres and forced to announce on Jaya TV that he was withdrawing his candidature. The BJP told reporters that it was sending a report to National President Amit Shah.Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa meanwhile has called off her campaign visit to certain locations, the campaign was to begin on September 12. AIADMK sources have rejected the BJP's allegations and say the Tirunelveli mayor candidate of the BJP pulled back due to lack of relevant documents.The BJP is making a serious attempt in Tamil Nadu to contest and win local polls, with an eye on assembly polls in 2016. With many allies in its kitty like Vijaykanth’s DMDK, Vaiko’s MDMK and Ramadoss’ PMK- the party is confident of strengthening its base in Tamil Nadu by 2016.
