The Anna University has come up with a new rule. The university has decided to start taking a fine of Rs. 10,000 from students who use mobile phones in class. They will also seize the phones from them.

The New Indian Express reported that the Guindy College of Engineering has sent out a circular to students stating that whoever uses mobile phones inside classrooms, offices and labs will be fined.

A mechanical engineering student from the campus told TNIE that besides the fine, their mobile phones will also be seized and will be returned only after four years of college.

This move by the university is to avoid distractions and help the students to focus better and the fine amount would be given to the central administration.

The university has also decided to carry out frequent checks by the authorities.

The university had imposed a similar ban in 2005 but it was opposed by the students and parents. Later, the students were allowed to use mobile phones in their hostels and outside the classrooms, as reported by The New Indian Express.

In 2008, the university had warned the students stating that they would be suspended for a week if they are found with mobile phones in classrooms.

However, this year, the college has included these rules in the handbook given to first-year students who are staying in the hostel. Any violation of the rules will be referred to the Students Disciplinary Committee and their decision will be final, as reported by TNIE.
