The News Minute| March 25, 2014| 2.15 pm IST1980- Alagiri, Karunanidhi's second son was made in charge of Madurai edition of Murasoli- DMK's in house publication.1989- After years of managing Murasoli and friction with M K Stalin, M Kalagiri moved his base to Madurai permanently.1996- DMK was voted to power and Alagiri faction started growing, especially in the southern districts of Madurai, Theni etc.2001- Alagiri is suspended for the first time by DMK for anti-party activities. At this time, the rivalry between the two brothers had reached an all time high.May 2003- Jayalalithaa govt directs police to arrest Alagiri for the murder of DMK leader and Stalin supporter Kirrutinan.May 2007- Alagiri's men burn down the Madurai Dinakaran office owned by the Marans protesting a 'biased' survey. Three die in the incident. Maran owned paper Dinakaran had published a survey that Stalin was popular choice for CM, even Dayanidhi Maran was ahead of Alagiri according to survey.May 2008- Alagiri is acquitted by a court of all charges in Kiruttinan murder case.December 2008- DMK family has a patch up, mainly engineered by Selvi, Karunanidhi's daughter.2008- Azhagiri was appointed as the organizing secretary of the Dravid Munnetra Kazhagam party for southern districts following the by-poll victories in the state in 2008. 2009- Azhagiri was given the ticket for Madurai Lok Sabha Constituency in 2009 general elections, which he won eventually and later went on to become a cabinet minister.January 2014- Sibling rivalry back in focus as DMK suspends five alagiri loyalistsJanuary 24 2014- Alagiri is suspended again for talking out of turn and opposing DMK's bid to ally with actor Vijayakanth's party DMDK.March 2014- DMK chief announces that Alagiri has been permanently expelled by the party.
