After the rains stopped on Monday night, about 55,000 people were rescued in Chennai through choppers, boats and vehicles. At least 189 people have lost their lives in Tamil Nadu due to the rains and flooding.

The Indian Army, Indian Navy, National Disaster Response Force and the Coastal Security Group helped in the evacuating people. The Adyar area in Chennai was fully flooded due to the overflow of Chembarambakkam reservoir. About 50 boats were used to rescue people from the area. B Valarmati, Social Welfare Minister said that 25,595 people were rescued from Adyar banks and 12,918 people from other parts of the city, according to TOI report.

The Kancheepuram administration used 130 boats to rescue 16,613 people in the district.

Many people were stranded in areas including south of Tambaram and Mudichur. IAF personnel carried out six sorties in helicopters, evacuated 22 people and airdropped food packets and water in affected areas. About 30 members of the National Disaster Response Force(NDRF) assisted the operations in five rubber boats.

About 500 people were airlifted from flooded areas in Tambaram and northern half of Kancheepuram district.

R Gajalakshmi, Kancheepuram collector told The New Indian Express, “We expect the waters to recede in one or two days and normal life to resume.”
