A 25-year-old man died and at least 9 others were injured after a ride that was undergoing a trial run at the Kishkinta theme park in Chennai crashed on Wednesday evening.

The incident took place after the theme park was closed for the day.

Manikandan, 20 of Somangalamnallur, who had sustained head injuries, was declared dead by doctors at a private hospital in west Tambaram. Doctors said another patient - who could not be identified - was critical. Four of the theme park's staff sustained injuries.

Staff of the Kishkinta Theme Park were made to sit for a trial run on a joy ride known as Disco Dancer, a revolving merry-go-round, around 8 pm on Wednesday.

The Hindu reported:

The staff at the Kishkinta amusement park said a mechanical fault in the giant-wheel resulted in higher oscillation of the cabins attached to the wheel and the workers fell on their side.

Quoting police sources, the report added that the "sudden de-alignment of the giant wheel is being probed.”

Angry relatives of the injured, most of whom hail from villages in and around the theme park, accused that the theme park officials forced the staff to sit in trial runs.

The police have said that an investigation into the incident is on.
