With ‘mental hospital’ ‘jokes’, Subramanian Swamy, Rajdeep get into Twitter war of words

Subramanian Swamy’s distasteful ‘joke’ has earned him another in return.

It all started with the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh proposing building a 100m tall statue of Ram on the banks of the Sarayu River in Ayodhya. The site isn’t too far from the disputed Babri Masjid-Ramjanmabhoomi area.

On learning of this proposal, many people reacted - among them, Rajdeep Sardesai, who said that instead of a statue, what should be built is a world-class hospital in Gorakhpur, clearly referring to the poor infrastructure in government hospitals in the city: 290 children had died at BRD Medical College in August alone, triggering public outrage.

Taking the opportunity to make some comments in bad taste, BJP MP Subramanian Swamy decided to tweet back. What did he want to say?

Way to go, being insensitive about the mentally ill, Mr Swamy!

But instead of pointing out the insensitivity, Rajdeep Sardesai decided to give back in kind.

Of course, Swamy had to react once again, and this time, he needed to pull in Rajdeep’s wife in too while responding to a question.

We’re embarrassed for you two gentlemen. But Twitter, apparently, thought they were rather funny:
