Bharatanatyam dancers give the ‘Friends’ theme song a classical twist

Written by : TNM Staff

Music and dance – as it is proved time and again – tend to understand each other in ways that defy verbal description.

Words would divide Bharatanatyam into a dance from southern India and the iconic song “I’ll be there for you” made famous by the American sitcom Friends into a “western” song. But ever wonder what would happen if someone danced in Bharatanatyam to an Indian classical version of The Rembrandts’ “I’ll be there for you”?

This video of four girls performing uploaded by Bollyshake has become pretty viral among people on Facebook. Watch them sway in Bharatanatyam to the Indian classical twang of a western song.

The classical cover was composed by Mahesh Raghavan a music composer from the University of Edinburgh. He had uploaded it on YouTube in August. He has also Indianised many popular tracks using sitar, flute, table and drums emanating from electrical instruments.
