WTO deal halts as Argentina seeks India-like assurance

The News Minute | November 26,2014 | 9.00 pm IST The World Trade Organisation (WTO) stopped just a heart-beat short of the first major global trade reform as Argentina sought last minute guarantees. Minutes before the gavel was to come down, Buenos Aires said the WTO meeting must formally agree to give equal backing to other parts of the Bali deal as was given to India earlier this month, forcing diplomats to revert to their capitals for instructions. Trade-watchers say the Argentinian demand is not expected to stall the accords – the first major reform in WTOs 19 year history – which could be closed tomorrow, Thursday. It may be recalled that the trade talks expected to generate $1 trillion and create 22 million jobs hit a snafu as India wanted guarantees that it could stockpile crops at above market prices last July.
