The News Minute| November 5, 2014| 5.00 pm ISTThe Kiss of Love event is over, but the dust hasn’t settled yet. While CPI (M) leader Pinarayi Vijayan has openly endorsed the event, there is much disharmony within the Congress. One of the few Congress leaders who came out in support of the event was V T Balram, MLA of Thirithala, Palakkad.  Balram posted on his Facebook wall on Monday, expressing disappointment over the Ernakulam district wing of the Kerala Students’ Union (KSU), joining the anti-kiss campaigners. He said, “To tie-up with fundamental and communal groups in the protest is against the norms of KSU. Forcing others to follow our ideology is fascism not democracy. So a moral police is a fascist. Why don’t we realize that the ‘kiss of love’ was just a representational protest against fascism? Women who don’t react to react to situations or a woman wearing jasmine flowers on their hair is not the so-called tradition of Kerala. Supporting such an ideology is the real cultural deterioration for a student’s union like KSU.”Balram had written that it was disheartening to see Kerala Students Union members protesting along with Shiv Sena, Yuva Morcha, ABVP against Kiss of love. He said that ‘an organization that fought for students’ rights, lead many protests valiantly and had made its revolutionary slogans toast of campuses should have not aligned with ‘fascists’. The Facebook post however earned Balram a swift reply from the Ernakulam Kerala Students Union (KSU) district president Tittu Antony. In his reply, Antony accused Balram of creating a hype without asking for their clarification.Tittu Antony dismissed Balram’s post as an effort to become the ‘new generation Gandhi.’“KSU is not with the communal groups. I scorn at your modern ideologies. Instead of harping about this in the media, why don’t you show your responsibility to the cause and kiss the voters from your constituency” Tittu Antony said.
