The News Minute| September 2, 2014| 4.00 am ISTPolice in Kannur, Kerala now believe the killing of E Manoj, an RSS district pramukh in the district was a revenge killing, for an attack on a CPM leader fifteen years ago.Manoj was one of the involved in a murder attempt on CPM leader P Jayarajan on August 25, 1999. Jayarajan is now a CPM district secretary. The BJP and RSS have called for a statewide hartal on Tuesday. Party sources say though initially the hartal was meant for only the region, it was later announced as a statewide hartal. With BJP President Amit Shah and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on a Kerala visit, the RSS_ BJP units in Kerala felt confident enough to call a statewide hartal. Kerala is one bastion that the BJP did not win a seat from this Lok Sabha election.On Monday, Manoj and his friend were attacked allegedly by Communist Party of India (Marxist) workers, after their car was bombed. (minor explosion reported) While Manoj succumbed to his injuries, K. Pramod, 35, who was injured, has been hospitalised.The pair were travelling in a Maruti Omni van, when assailants threw country made bombs at the vehicle, causing the driver to lose control and hit a wall. After this, the assailants then stabbed the two RSS workers. Although they were taken to a hospital in Thallassery, Manoj was declared brought dead.On August 17, a Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh worker, Suresh Kumar, 44, was killed in an attack by alleged CPI(M) workers. The region has witnessed political violence in the past, with attacks and counter-attacks.
