The viral image of 'people walking on the moon'? It's actually from Mumbai

Written by : TNM Staff

A picture of a pothole-ridden road is doing the rounds on social media and WhatsApp groups in Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Chennai, claiming to be an area in the city.

The photo shows a Bituminous road that has been completely destroyed due to the rain, with massive potholes filled with water.

In Hyderabad, the photo is doing the rounds with the message, "NASA found people walking on the Moon. HMDA (Hyderabad Municipal Development Authority) confirms it’s Kukatpally." In Chennai too, many are forwarding this picture after the recent bout of rains.

Another message replaces Kukatpally with Chintal Basti, another area in Hyderabad.

However, the picture is neither from Kukatpally, Chennai or Chintal Basti, and seems to be from Mumbai.

The picture was initially tweeted with just the first part of the message, by Darshan Mehta, a journalist, on August 1.

It is however understandable that residents of Hyderabad or Chennai have passed it off as a road in their own city, due to the crumbling state of infrastructure in the 'global city'.

Recently, rains have inundated several parts of these cities, leaving citizens exasperated. Bengaluru also witnessed a number of deaths due to road accidents, caused by big potholes.
