Cosmetic major L’Oreal on Wednesday launched a wearable electronic patch that will inform its users about how much UV exposure they are being exposed to, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Importantly, the company will give the heart-shaped band-aid like ‘first ever’ stretchable smart patches to its customers for free.

"When you apply it, it becomes like a second skin," Guive Balooch, global vice president of L'Oréal's Technology Incubator told TODAY.

The disposable sticker is made up of 16 different boxes that change color when exposed to UV rays and can be worn on any part of the skin indicating the degree of exposure.

The company said that it will soon launch an app (currently in its beta stage) that will use a photo of the patch and give exact UV exposure readings. It will also inform its users about when exactly the exposure reaches beyond recommended levels.

"We give you information about your behavior and the idea is that this information will help you take preventive measures in the future," Balooch added about the importance of the app.

“Previous technologies could only tell users the amount of potential sun exposure they were receiving per hour while wearing a rigid, non-stretchable device” Balooch told Daily Mail. 

L'Oréal teamed up with design engineering firm PCH, to create the stretchable sensor made up of five super-thin layers.

"Making sure everything moved, and it's very flexible was part of the challenge,” Liam Casey, CEO of PCH told TODAY.
